New Frontiers in Architectural Research: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Advances in architectural knowledge are discussed in a large number of publications, which are of great value for understanding which topics are directing new disciplinary concerns. This article uses advanced bibliometric and big-data techniques to systematize the disciplinary productivity published in architecture journals indexed in Web of Science between 2012 and 2022. The study has identified thematic clusters among the approximately 7,000 publications analyzed, recognizing prevalent lines of research. Among the findings, it can be suggested that although a good portion of the reviewed publications have conservative approaches, in recent years approaches have been deepened and maintained that could offer more innovative results than those seen between 2012 and 2018, with greater emphasis on the scientific method, seeking to generate replicable and verifiable findings and reflections, while reducing subjectivity and speculation, aiming at evidence-based ethical reflections. Thus, two trending disciplinary epistemological approaches were identified: on the one hand, an increased research methodological complexity and on the other, more reflections on the ethos of the architectural practice. This study provides a systematic and verifiable view of these trends in architectural research.
