Post-Occupancy Evaluation of University Spaces as Didactic Tools for Architecture Training

Abstract

Post-Occupancy Evaluations (POE) helps identify the adequacy and shortcomings of buildings. Implemented by students, these tools have the potential to assist learning processes in different training areas. This study introduces a proposal for a subjective evaluation of university spaces, along with an assessment of their use as a teaching tool. This POE proposal considers the assessment of two buildings and common areas of a training center. The categories evaluated are: 1) comfort, 2) aesthetics, 3) use-function, and 4) spatiality. It was used as a teaching tool at a Mexican University and engaged architecture students. Among the challenges identified were how to solve conflicting student schedules and the need for specialized support. When comparing the buildings, the results revealed differences in terms of thermal and lighting comfort, as well as in functionality. As a teaching tool, the exercise not only increases the students’ research skills, but it also helps them improve their understanding of bioclimatic design criteria and strengthens their abilities for the development of architectural projects.
