"Se" in Spanish and its problems

Abstract

The paper classifies semantic values and syntactic constructions of Spanish "se" by analysing texts collected for many years, basically from written sources, and, occasionally, from oral speech. Theses of various investigators are examined and it is concluded that reflexive "se" is the basic value that explains all its functions acquired during its evolution and that traditional linguistics has clearly explained.

Se pencher une fois de plus sur ce qu'on appelle traditionellement le passif réfléchi (pasiva refleja) et le passif impersonnel (...) en espagnol risque fortement de ressembler à une tentative suicidaire d'enfoncer des portes ouvertes. Le nombre de publications et d'études à ce propos est en effet impressionnant, mais le nombre de questions non élucidées l'est tout autant et fait du passif pronominal l'un des phénomènes les plus controversés de la syntaxe espagnole (et romane) (Roegist-Spanoghe, 290).
