Abstract

This work analyses Jorge Edwards' novel El origen del mundo (1996). It starts by placing the Chilean writer in the setting of the generation of the 50s, describing his literary influences and the importance the city has in his writings. The novel, built as a story of love and intrigue, encompasses themes which are very important for Edwards' narrative such as the loss of illusions, old age and the failure of many intellectuals. At the same time it enacts a theme which is present in all his writings: the representation of reality.
