Trajectories of Professional Women Editors from the Late 19th Century in Chile

Abstract
This paper studies biographies of paper’s women editors in Chile at the end of the 19th century. Considering their trajectories, I analyse the relationship between women and professionalization and the access to the cultural field in a critical moment for its conformation. A definition of women editor is made which considers a transformation according to historical context. It is demonstrated that to be an editor was a way to access to cultural field. This permits women manage gender norms. The specialization as editors made them professionals. They developed strategies of self-education taking advantage of the few possibilities of formal education available in that moment.
